Sights - Mã Pí Lèng Pass
Located high up in the Hà Giang region, Mã Pí Lèng Pass offers panoramic views of jagged limestone cliffs, the deep Tu San Canyon, and the winding Nho Que River.
The name Mã Pí Lèng is derived from the local Hmong language, meaning horse’s nose bridge which is a reference to the shape of the pass resembling a horse’s nose. It stretches over 20 kilometers, connecting the towns of Đồng Văn and Mèo Vạc. The pass reaches elevations of over 1,500 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest mountain passes in Vietnam.
Construction
The toughest part of the loop road - the 21 km from Dong Van to Meo Vac took nearly 2 years to complete. Men hanging off the face of the mountain, on single ropes were called the brave ones as they used hand drills to make the holes for the dynamite. This is why there are many memorials dedicated to the men that created the road along its route. The loop road aka peace road was finally opened in 1965.
