Fansipan Sun World Legend
Fansipan stands as the tallest mountain peak in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, reaching an impressive height of 3,147.3 metres. It is affectionately nicknamed “the Roof of Indochina” and forms part of the Hoang Lien Son (Dragon) mountain range. Located in Lao Cai province, the nearest town, Sapa, is just 9km away.
Train Station
Located at the Sun Plaza opposite the main town square, the train takes you up to the cable car station. The train ride is very picturesque and takes around 10 minutes to complete. The train station is also where you buy tickets for the train / cable car / funicular.
Cable car
Climbing the mountain traditionally takes three days, but a more convenient option is available today — a scenic cable car that has been operational since 2016. The cable car journey to the summit covers 6.3km in just 20 minutes and holds the Guinness World Record for the longest non-stop three-rope cable car.
Funicular
At the top of the cable car station, a funicular railway is available to reach the mountain’s peak. Alternatively, you can ascend the hundreds of steps. For the modest extra cost, the funicular is recommended as these steps take some time to complete.
Summit attractions
The summit is not just where you can see the peak, but also Vietnamese Buddhist spiritual attractions too. Attractions such as the Great Buddha Statue and other giant statues cast in bronze, a monastery, an 11-Story Stupa to name but a few.
When to book
Fansipan is a sought-after destination for both Vietnamese and international tourists. To avoid the crowds, it’s advisable to go early in the day. It’s also crucial to check the weather forecast, as fog can severely restrict visibility at the summit, so its best to purchase your ticket on a clear day. With temperatures approximately 10°C cooler than in Sapa, dressing appropriately is essential. If you’re touring Sapa, adding Fansipan to your itinerary is highly recommended.
