Sights - Tiger (Nguom Ngao) Cave
Located just about 3km from Ban Gioc Waterfall in Cao Bang province. Tiger Cave is truly impressive, stretching some 2km-3km inside with ceilings that are 50m high in many places. This cave has a choice of two routes once inside.
The caves were first discovered in 1921 by French explorers. However it was not until 1995 they were first opened to the public. This cave still has the check-in marks that the 1921 explorers used when mapping this cave. Tiger cave (Nguom Ngao) gets its name from local Tay people.
Today the caves are fitted out with lights, handrails as well as high speed Wifi so you can video call the folks back home and share the cave experience! Please note that when visiting the cave - the temperature inside is usually around 5°C cooler than outside. Also please note that there are bats in the cave so be careful when looking up.
Classic route (1km)
This is the original route which takes around an hour to travel around this route. All the photos you see on this page are from this route. The route is straightforward with no special skill required. Inside the caves are up to 50m high in places and are well lit to show off the impressive features.
New adventure route (3km)
If you choose the newest route, you’ll be issued with hi-vis protective clothing, a torch, and suitable shoes before going inside as you will be going rafting, wading (the water is cold in the winter) and crossing bamboo bridges on this route! The route is 3km in total and has many fascinating features not many people have yet seen. If you choose this route, it takes ½ a day to complete so you may need to adjust your timetable if you are keeping a strict schedule.
