Mai Chau
Introduction
Mai Chau and the nearby Pu Luong Nature Reserve are just a few hours drive southwest of Hanoi, making them one of the most accessible escapes from the capital. But don’t let the short distance fool you - this is a world away from the city.
The Mai Chau Valley is home to the White Thai ethnic minority, who have farmed the flat valley floor for generations. Their traditional wooden stilt houses sit amongst emerald green rice paddies, framed on all sides by limestone karsts. It is one of the most photogenic landscapes in northern Vietnam.
Above the valley, the Hmong highland villages of Hang Kia and Pa Co offer a completely different experience - remote mountain settlements where batik, paj ntaub embroidery and traditional crafts are still part of daily life.
Neighbouring Pu Luong Nature Reserve extends the experience further with pristine jungle, terraced rice fields carved into steep hillsides and waterfalls hidden in dense forest. Together, Mai Chau and Pu Luong offer some of the best trekking, cultural immersion and nature in northern Vietnam - without the crowds you’ll find in Sapa or Ha Giang.
