Destination Mai Chau

New destination - Mai Chau & Pu Luong

We are very happy to announce that we are now offering tours in the Mai Chau Valley and the neighbouring Pu Luong Nature Reserve. This has been something we have wanted to do for a while and we are excited to finally have it ready.

Mai Chau is located just 135km southwest of Hanoi, making it one of the closest rural escapes from the capital. But despite the short distance, arriving in the valley feels like stepping into a different world. Emerald rice paddies stretch across the flat valley floor, framed on all sides by limestone karsts, with traditional White Thai stilt houses dotted throughout.

What makes Mai Chau special

Mai Chau offers something different from our other destinations. The valley floor is flat - perfect for cycling and easy walking between the villages. The White Thai communities of Ban Lac and Pom Coong welcome visitors into their stilt houses for homestays, home-cooked meals and traditional dance performances. You can watch brocade textiles being woven on looms beneath the houses and buy handmade scarves and bags directly from the weavers.

But there is more to Mai Chau than the valley floor. Head up into the mountains and you reach the Hmong highland villages of Hang Kia and Pa Co. Here the culture shifts completely - batik workshops, paj ntaub embroidery, and the vibrant Pa Co Sunday market where Hmong families from surrounding villages come to trade produce, livestock and traditional textiles.

The Pa Co Sunday market is one of the most authentic ethnic markets in northern Vietnam.

We also visit a local Dao family to see traditional spirit paper making - the centuries-old craft of making rough paper from tree bark for burning during ancestor worship ceremonies. And for those who want some exercise, the 1,200 steps up to Chieu Cave next to Ban Lac reward you with a panoramic view of the entire valley.

Pu Luong Nature Reserve

Just 1.5 hours southwest of Mai Chau lies the Pu Luong Nature Reserve - over 17,000 hectares of protected jungle, terraced rice fields and limestone mountains. This is where Mai Chau transforms from a cultural destination into a proper trekking one.

The rice terraces here rival Sapa’s finest but see a fraction of the visitors. Trails wind village to village through bamboo forest, past streams lined with iconic bamboo water wheels and through hamlets where homestay culture is still genuine and uncommercialised. The highlight is Hieu Waterfall - multi-tiered cascades with natural swimming pools - followed by bamboo rafting on the Cham River.

We offer two Pu Luong trekking tours: a 3-day with one night in the reserve and a 4-day that goes deep into the southern section, trekking from Don village to Kho Muong through some of the most remote and beautiful terrain in northern Vietnam.

Mai Chau vs Sapa - which is right for you?

We get asked this a lot, so here is an honest comparison. Both are incredible destinations but they suit different travellers.

Choose Mai Chau if…

  • You want easy access from Hanoi. Mai Chau is 3-4 hours by road. Sapa is 5-6 hours by train or car. Mai Chau works well as a weekend trip.
  • You prefer flat, easy terrain. The valley floor is completely flat - ideal for cycling and gentle walking. Great for seniors, families with young children or anyone who does not want to trek 15km a day up and down mountains.
  • You want fewer crowds. Mai Chau sees far fewer tourists than Sapa. Pu Luong even less. If you want rice terraces without the tour buses, this is the place.
  • You are interested in White Thai culture. The White Thai are the dominant ethnic group in Mai Chau. Their stilt houses, brocade weaving and cuisine (try the cơm lam bamboo rice) are distinct from the Hmong and Dao cultures of Sapa.
  • You want to combine culture with trekking. One day in the cultural valley, then head into Pu Luong for proper trekking. Best of both worlds.

Choose Sapa if…

  • You want serious mountain trekking. Sapa’s Muong Hoa Valley has steeper terrain, longer trails and more challenging routes. If you want 5-7 hours of trekking per day through dramatic mountain scenery, Sapa delivers.
  • You want the biggest rice terraces. The terraced landscapes of Ta Van and the Muong Hoa Valley are some of the most spectacular in Southeast Asia. Mai Chau’s terraces are beautiful but smaller in scale. Pu Luong’s are comparable but in a very different setting.
  • You want more ethnic diversity. In Sapa you encounter Black Hmong, Red Dao, Zay and other groups all within a short distance. Mai Chau is predominantly White Thai on the valley floor and Hmong in the highlands.
  • You want town amenities. Sapa town has restaurants, bars, hotels and attractions like Fansipan cable car and the glass bridge. Mai Chau is a rural valley - the appeal is the simplicity.
  • You want the classic Vietnam trekking experience. Sapa is the original and most famous trekking destination in northern Vietnam for good reason.

Or do both

They are different enough that doing both makes sense if you have the time. Many of our guests combine a few days in Sapa with a few days in Mai Chau. The contrast between the steep mountain valleys of Sapa and the peaceful flat paddies of Mai Chau is something special.
